Parking lots are an essential part of vehicle owners’ daily lives. People rely on them for convenience, whether shopping, working or simply going about their daily routines.

However, parking lots can also be hotspots for accidents and collisions. Exploring the leading causes of parking lot collisions enables you to find ways to avoid them.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is a major contributor to parking lot collisions. With the advent of smartphones and the constant need to stay connected, drivers often check messages or make calls while navigating parking lots. This momentary lapse can easily escalate into fender benders and even more serious accidents.

Speeding

Speeding in a parking lot is a recipe for disaster. It compromises reaction time and increases the severity of collisions. Parking lots often have speed limits posted for a reason. Adhere to these limits to ensure safety for yourself and others.

Rushing to find a parking spot is a common reason for speeding. Plan and give yourself ample time to park without feeling rushed. Always be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially children. Slowing down can make all the difference in preventing a tragedy.

Poor visibility

Limited visibility in parking lots is a significant challenge. Large vehicles like trucks and SUVs can obstruct your view of pedestrians and other vehicles. Additionally, poorly designed parking lots with inadequate lighting can make it difficult to see clearly.

Adjust your mirrors properly to maximize your field of vision to improve visibility in parking lots. Check them frequently while maneuvering in the parking lot. Whenever possible, park in well-lit areas to enhance visibility. Avoid parking in dark corners or secluded spots. Most importantly, when driving near large vehicles, exercise extra caution. Assume they may not see you, and give them plenty of space.

Parking lot collisions are avoidable with awareness, caution and responsible driving. By addressing the leading causes mentioned above, you can significantly lower the risk of accidents in parking lots.
